Ward expecting no let-up on Richmond visit

Ealing Trailfinders Director of Coaching Ben Ward is expecting a huge clash against Richmond on Saturday.

Ward’s side are currently unbeaten and lead National 1, though only on point’s difference from the team from the Athletic Ground.

Steve Hill’s side have also collected 24 of the 25 points on offer from the first five matches of the season and it means that both teams will be in determined mood to lay down a marker early in the season and open a lead on the chasing pack.

“It is our first London derby of the season and it is between the two unbeaten teams in National 1 so it adds a bit of spice to it, ” Ward said.

“Richmond are a good team and have some very good players. They have a few ex-Ealing Trailfinders lads in the squad and they will know how we like to play. They have had a great start and will be full of confidence. Our defence so far has been pretty good but it will be our greatest test so far on Saturday.”

Richmond are the division’s leading scorers with 184 points scored and in fullback and Chris Kinloch’s housemate Rob Kirby they boast the leading points scorer with 74 points so far this season.

They also one of the two leading try scorers in number 8 Chris Davies, who has found the line seven times this season, one ahead of Ealing Trailfinders Phil Chesters.

For Ealing Trailfinders fans travelling across Kew Bridge for the 15.00 kickoff, it all adds up to a fearsome early-season clash.

“Over the years we have had some exciting close games against Richmond and Saturday should be no different, ” Ward added.

“Both teams will have knocks and injuries but that is the nature of the sport but whichever 30 players take the field Saturday it should be a great spectacle and advert for National 1.”
