Walker and Cornish sign on for 2017-18

Ealing Trailfinders have rewarded Alun Walker and Matt Cornish for their performances by awarding them new contracts for next season.

The 26-year-old Walker is in his third season at the club after he joined before the 2014-15 season. The Scotsman helped the team to the National 1 title which marked his return to the Greene King IPA Championship where he had previously played for Nottingham.

He scored five tries in 17 appearances last season and has already bettered that total with hat-tricks against Bedford Blues and Dragons Premiership Select.

Cornish has been rewarded for his efforts in the Ealing Trailfinders Pro Academy for the past two seasons and been given a first-team contract.

He made his first team debut against Rotherham Titans in the British and Irish Cup last season and continued to make strides this season.

Cornish has been a regular in the Ealing Trailfinders match-day squad since he made his first Championship appearance away to London Irish in September. Since then he has been involved a further 16 times and has scored two tries.

Walker and Cornish’s re-signing mean that they will be competing for the hooking spots along with Rhys Lawrence who is going into the second year of his two-year deal at Vallis Way.

“Alun is very strong in the set piece,” Ealing Trailfinders Director of Rugby Ben Ward said. “I believe he has a lot more to offer around the pitch but needs to work hard in the off season and pre-season to ensure he is able to do so consistently.

“Matt has come on leaps and bounds since first joining us. He was meant to have another season out on loan this year but his performances in pre-season and an injury to Alun gave him a chance and he hasn't looked back.

“He has played a good amount of Championship rugby this season and I'm expecting him to really kick on again next year and be pushing for that starting jersey.

“I'm really pleased with all three hookers. They work very hard on their game and I'm looking forward to seeing them push each other next season for the starting jersey.”
