Love called up to England Counties

James Love will be heading north this week to link up with the England Counties squad ahead of their match against the Scottish Club XV on Friday.

The fullback will spend the week training at Myerscough College in Preston where he will aim to win a place in the squad for the match at Fylde’s Woodland’s Memorial Ground on Friday, 27 February.

“I’m very pleased, it was a bit of a surprise to be selected because I was coming back from injury, ” Love said. “I wanted to be selected and to represent England in any way is always an honour.

“I’m sure it is a very talented squad and that there will be plenty of competition for places. I need to go there with the right mindset to have a good training week and make that first XV.”

In recent years Phil Chesters, Owen Bruynseels and Tom Wheatcroft have won selection for the full team, while Luke Daniels has featured for the U20 side.

The 27-year-old Love is no stranger to representative rugby having played both 15s and 7s for the Arabian Gulf RFU having been born and brought up in Bahrain’s capital, Manama.

“I’ve had a bit of experience and a few international caps. It’s not top, top level, but it is valuable experience nonetheless.

“I’ve spoken to Tom and I’ve spoken to Owen and they said it is quite a nice environment. The boys are put together and everyone is on the same page to get down, work hard and have a good week.”

The England Counties team is the representative side of English community rugby with players up to National 1 level eligible for selection.

Vallis Way hosted England Counties’ match against the France Federale XV in 2013 and they will meet again on 20 March in Perigueux. They also play two matches in Romania in June.

“It is a great honour for James to be recognised by the England Counties team and it is great that Ealing Trailfinders are able to maintain their link with England Counties, ” Ealing Trailfinders director of coaching Ben Ward said.

“We wish James and the England Counties team well and hope he receives the chance to contribute to a winning performance.”
