Lawrence set for first start as cup campaign gets underway

Rhys Lawrence will make a first start of the season when Ealing Trailfinders travel away to face Moseley in their opening British and Irish Cup fixture of the season on Saturday.

The Welsh hooker moved up the M4 to Vallis Way from Bristol over the summer, but missed the first two months through injury. He is now fully recovered and he will pack down between props George Porter and Sam Rodman a week after he came off the bench in the win away to London Welsh.

Ben Ward’s team are seeking their first victory at Billesley Common in four matches. Two seasons ago they lost in both the Greene King IPA Championship and the Cup and earlier this season the team lost 38-25 in the league.

Director of Coaching Ward has selected a mix of youth and experience in the second row of Carwyn Jones and Adam Preocanin, while Chris York will continue as captain from number eight with Harrison Orr and Arthur Ellis either side of him on the flanks.

In the backline there are two changes from the team that won 27-3 at Old Deer Park. Will Harries comes in for Luke Daniels at fullback, while his fellow Welsh 7s international Alex Walker will start as scrum-half, alongside fly-half Ward.

Tom Wheatcroft and Danny Barnes will begin in the centres, with James Stephenson and Phil Chesters outside them on the wings.
