Kieran Powering up the scrum for Championship challenge

Forwards coach Kieran Power has been a busy man over the summer ensuring that the forward pack is on its mettle and ready for the huge challenge of taking on the other packs in the Greene King IPA Championship.

Ealing Trailfinders will be up against some huge packs in the Championship. Two seasons ago it was something the team took time to get to grips with and which they need to be ready for from their first match, away to Rotherham Titans on Sunday 6 September.

“It is a huge physical step for us, something we didn’t embrace the last time we were promoted, but we took it on board after being relegated and we built on it last season, ” Power said.

“Now we’ve brought in some better quality and built on it to make sure we are ready for that big physical challenge that is the Championship.”

The first step in developing a powerful pack came last season in National 1 when a host of new faces arrived at Vallis Way. They have added to the pack over the summer with the likes of Rhys Lawrence, George Porter, Michael Horford and Nathan Hannay bringing Championship experience to W13.

It is vital that the pack is able to gain the upper hand so as to be the foundation for the team’s performances

“If you can’t control your own possession you will be under a lot of pressure, ” Power said. “At the same time you want to create pressure on the opposition to make sure that defensively you are on top or them and also to ensure you have territory on the field.

“Having that platform will resonate around the team. If you know you can have that ball and that the backs can play off it, it sets a precedent early on that can be carried on through the eighty minutes.”

Power has received help over the last year from England and London Irish hooker David Paice, who has been passing on the experience of his eight caps and 164-Premiership appearances.

“It has been a huge advantage of someone of David Paice’s experience, being one of the most capped hookers in the Premiership, ” he said. “He has been around, so has been able to help with their knowledge and work with the hookers on their throwing.”
