Gippa marks return in winning style

After a year on the sidelines Karl Gibson finally made a return to Ealing Trailfinders 1st XV action away to Wharfedale on Saturday.

Gibson broke a metatarsal in his foot a year ago and it has been a long road back for the Geordie hooker, but he came off the bench in the Yorkshire Dales and played a big part in helping the team turn an 8-0 halftime deficit into a 21-8 victory.

He was thrust straight into the fray in a match where the forward battle was key to the result and he responded in fighting mood to help the pack gain the ascendancy.

“It was a tough match away from home up north, but we got a good win at the end, ” he said. “I’m happy to be back playing again, it’s just a shame we couldn’t have got the bonus point at the end.

“It is a hard place to come away to and we try and get the bonus point every time, but we want the win first and that’s what we’ve done.”

Gibson broke the metatarsal early in the 2013-14 season and underwent an operation to pin the bone.

Throughout his rehabilitation he was a regular figure around the club putting in the hours in the gym to get back to full fitness in time for the start of the season, as well as coaching the under-17s.

He played against Bedford Blues in pre-season, but then had to be patient for his opportunity once the season began.

“It has been a long road back to recovery, but I’m happy to get out and run around with the lads, ” he said.

“I had enough rest last season and I’ve just been waiting to go this season.”
